Climate Facts

  • The earth’s atmosphere is warmed by the trapping of certain radiation emitted by the sun and by the earth.
  • This is called the greenhouse effect.
  • The radiation is trapped/absorbed by certain gases present in the atmosphere.
  • These gases are primarily carbon dioxide, and secondly methane, as well as water vapour.
  • They are called the greenhouse gases. Some warming of the atmosphere is necessary to maintain life.
  • However, greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide, are accumulating at an unprecedented rate.
  • The atmosphere is warming at an unprecendented rate.
  • The burning of fossil fuels is the major source of carbon dioxide.
  • This carbon dioxide is causing more radiation to be trapped in the atmosphere, thus warming it faster, and more than ever before.
  • Humans are causing the atmosphere to warm by burning fossil fuels at an unprecedented rate.
  • The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere now exceeds 400ppm, more than ever before recorded or detected.
  • Our planet, our only home, will warm by 2 degrees Celsius by 2050. We cannot avoid this.
  • Our planet, our only home, will warm by at least 4 degrees Celsius by 2100 if we do not sharply and permanently reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide.
  • This means sharply and permanently reducing our use of fossil fuels.
  • At 2 degrees of warming, Australia will be a very different place, but still liveable (Climate Council Reports).
  • At 4 degrees of warming, much of Australia will be unrecognisable, and much may be unliveable (Climate Council Reports).
  • Civilization is threatened at more than 4 degrees of warming.

In order to restrain global warming to 2 degrees, all politicians must accept that as holders of their office in trust for present and future generations of Australians, they must NOW devise and immediately implement policies which achieve this.
